I work at KIMEP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan teaching academic writing and literature to undergraduates and Masters language courses to teachers.

Since 2006 I have worked in the Middle East, Singapore, and now Kazakhstan (where people do speak English).

I travel as much as I can but get home twice a year to visit my family, friends, and church centered in the Washington DC Area.

I recall the morning after the election of John Kennedy was announced. We were all instructed to "come up" with black cards as a symbol of mourning at Chaps practice in the auditorium. Little did we anticipate the events of the fall of 1963.

Our Latin teacher, Mrs. Connors, had returned from Germany where she and her husband had been stationed. Some days, instead of holding us responsible for our lines from the AENEID, she told us about the concentration camps. This was the first time, well after the end of the war, that I even knew about the Holocaust. Her story was met with disbelief.

We had a very attractive young teacher, Miss Schubach, who made up songs to help us remember the kings and queens of London.
